Thank-you notes for money gifts: what to write (with examples)
How to thank someone for cash or a fund contribution without naming the amount, how to say what it became, and examples for family, friends and colleagues.

The short version
- Never name the amount. "Your generous gift" is enough.
- Say what the money became, or will become: a dinner on the honeymoon, a piece of furniture, the start of a savings goal.
- Add one line about the person: something from the wedding, or what they mean to you.
- Send it within two to three months, like every other thank-you.
A thank-you note for a money gift thanks the person for their generosity without naming the amount, says what the money will be used for, and adds a personal line. That third part is what makes it a note rather than a receipt.
Should you mention the amount?
No. "Your generous gift" or "your kind contribution to our honeymoon" is warm and complete. Naming the figure turns a thank-you into an acknowledgment of payment, and makes comparisons possible between guests.
Say what the money became
This is the line that people remember. "We used it for a dinner by the water on our second night in Lisbon" or "it went straight into the fund for our first sofa, and we think of you every time we sit on it" makes the gift real. If you have not spent it yet, say what you plan to do.
Examples you can adapt
Dear Aunt Ruth, thank you so much for your generous gift. It is going toward our first proper dining table, the one we have been promising ourselves for years, and we hope you'll be one of the first to eat at it. It meant so much to see you dancing at the wedding. Love, Emma and James
Dear Michael, thank you for your very kind contribution to our honeymoon. Thanks to you, we had a long lunch on a terrace in Porto that we are still talking about. We loved having you with us on the day. With love, Emma and James
Dear colleagues, thank you all for the lovely card and your generous gift. We have put it toward our honeymoon, and we will bring back photos (and pastries). It was such a kind surprise. Emma
Digital or handwritten?
Either works, as long as every note is written to its person. A digital thank-you with a photo from the wedding, sent individually, is warmly received; one identical message sent to everyone is not. For older relatives, a handwritten card is still the gesture they notice most.
Thank them for their kindness, tell them where it went, and never tell them how much it was.
Common questions
Should you mention the amount in a thank-you note for money?
No. Thank them for their generous gift or kind contribution without naming the figure, and say what you will use it for.
What do you write in a thank-you card for a money gift?
Thank them for their generosity, say what the money became or will become, and add one personal line, such as a memory from the wedding or what they mean to you.
How soon should you send thank-you notes for wedding money?
Within two to three months of the wedding, like other wedding thank-you notes. A late note is still far better than none.
