Engagement party invitations: timing, guests and wording

The short version

  • Invite only people who will also be invited to the wedding. An engagement party invitation is read as a promise.
  • Send invitations three to six weeks ahead; the party usually happens within a few months of the engagement.
  • Anyone can host: traditionally the parents of one partner, now often the couple or friends.
  • Gifts are not expected, so do not mention a registry on the invitation.

An engagement party invitation goes out three to six weeks before the party, and only to people who will also be invited to the wedding. That second rule matters most: guests read an engagement party invitation as a sign they will be at the wedding, and finding out otherwise is hurtful.

Who hosts an engagement party?

Traditionally the parents of one partner, often the bride's, in North America. Today it is whoever offers: either set of parents, close friends, or the couple themselves. Sometimes each family hosts one party in its own town. The invitation should say who is hosting.

Who should be invited?

Family and close friends you are certain to invite to the wedding. If the wedding will be small, keep the engagement party small too, or make it clearly a casual gathering for a particular group, such as colleagues or one side of the family.

When should it happen?

Usually within a few months of the engagement, while the news is still news. A party less than a few months before the wedding tends to compete with the bridal shower and the wedding itself.

Are gifts expected?

Not in most places. Some guests bring a small gift anyway; thank them warmly and do not open gifts in front of everyone. Leave registry details off the invitation entirely.

We're getting married, and we can't think of a better reason for a party. Join us Saturday, March 6, from 4 PM in the garden at Mom and Dad's. Bring nothing but yourselves.

Should the invitation be digital?

An engagement party is a natural fit for a digital invitation: it is less formal than the wedding, guests reply on the spot, and the link carries the address and a map.

Invite only the people you will invite to the wedding. Everything else about an engagement party is flexible.

Common questions

Who should be invited to an engagement party?

Only people who will also be invited to the wedding, usually family and close friends. Guests read an engagement party invitation as a promise of a wedding invitation.

When should engagement party invitations be sent?

Three to six weeks before the party. The party itself usually takes place within a few months of the engagement.

Do you bring a gift to an engagement party?

Gifts are not expected in most places, and the invitation should not mention a registry. A card or a small gift is a kind gesture but not an obligation.
