Retirement party invitations: wording for every tone
Who hosts a retirement party, when to send invitations, how to keep it a surprise, and wording for a formal dinner, a relaxed gathering and a workplace send-off.

The short version
- A retirement party can be hosted by the family, by colleagues, or by the person retiring.
- Name the guest of honor, their years of service if they would like that, and the hosts.
- Send invitations three to four weeks ahead, and keep a surprise party off any shared thread.
- Gifts are optional; a group gift from colleagues is common.
A retirement party invitation names the person retiring, says who is hosting, and gives the details of the celebration, often with a nod to their years of work. It can be a formal dinner, a relaxed gathering at home or a send-off at the workplace, and the wording should match.
Who hosts a retirement party?
Colleagues often host a send-off at or near work; family often host a party for friends and relatives; and many people now host their own. If both happen, keep them separate: a workplace event during or after work, and a personal celebration for the people from the rest of their life.
Wording for a formal dinner
Please join us in honoring Margaret Hale on her retirement after thirty-two years at Riverside Hospital. Friday, September 17, at 7 PM, The Grand Pavilion. Kindly reply by September 3.
Wording for a relaxed gathering
Dad is retiring! Come celebrate the start of his permanent weekend. Saturday, September 18, from 4 PM, in the garden at 14 Linden Avenue. Food, drinks and bad golf jokes. Let us know by September 10.
Wording for a surprise
Shh, it's a surprise! Help us send off Tom in style after 25 years. Friday, June 4, at 5:30 PM, The Boathouse. Please arrive by 5:15. Reply to Sarah, not to Tom.
What about gifts?
Optional. Colleagues often give a group gift; friends and family may bring something for the hobby the retiree has been waiting for. If the guest of honor would rather have nothing, say "no gifts, please; just bring your best stories".

A retirement party celebrates a whole working life. Let the invitation say how long it was, if they are proud of it.
